John Swallow, Trombone (1958 - 1985) Robert Nagel

During his career, John Swallow was widely known as of the most important trombone performers and teacher in the United States., having enjoyed performance associations with the Utah Symphony under Maurice Abravanel and the Chicago Symphony under Fritz Reiner. Swallow was also a member of the famed New York Brass Quintet for many years and numerous New York freelance orchestras, as well as groups such as Gunther Schuller’s “Twentieth Century Innovations” and Arthur Weisberg’s “Contemporary Chamber Ensemble.”

Swallow has earned much notoriety and praise as an advocate and performer of twentieth century trombone music. He has also been active as a teacher on the faculties of the Yale School of Music, the New England Conservatory of Music, and the Hart and Manhattan Schools of Music.
