Robert Nagel is highly esteemed as a trumpet virtuoso, pedagogue, composer and arranger. He attended Julliard School of music in New York where he received his performance diploma (1943), and a B.S. (1949) and M.S. (1951) in composition. Nagel has been recognized for his contribution to the arts as the recipient of the For over 20 years, Nagel was one of the most prominent freelance trumpeters in New York, performing with orchestras, in recording studios, and for radio and television broadcasts. He was frequently featured as a soloist and clinician, and was the main figure in the genesis and direction in the New York Brass Quintet.

Nagel’s longest teaching engagement was as Professor of Brass at Yale (1957-1988), and has been a member of the faculties of numerous other institutions: the Julliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Hartt School of Music, Rutgers University, Hofstra University and more (See Affiliations). Nagel has written original works for a variety of ensembles and instruments and has contributed many notable arrangements especially to the Brass Quintet literature. Several of his works have been performed in the greater New York area, and some have become standard repertoire for the Quintet and other professional ensembles.
